There is a crisis in the city in which Medea's world had turned to enmity. The nurse reminds Jason of the story behind this crisis, and why it has occurred. Jason and his crew sailed to a city called Colchis, which  happened to be where Medea lived, all in search of the Golden Fleece. Medea ended up falling in love with Jason and used her powers to help him get the Golden Fleece, and fled back to Jason's home along with him. Medea continued to use her magic, and they eventually had two young boys. Unfortunately, Jason left his family to remarry a woman named Glauce, the daughter of King Creon. Medea is obviously upset about this and she cries out to the gods, she wants revenge, and asks, "See what my hated husband gas done? Grant me to see him at last with his bride, palace and all, crumble in ruin" (342). This separation of Medea and her husband has crushed her  emotions to the point in which she curses her own existence, and her children’s.

Already I can form the thought that there is going to be a lot of revenge and betrayal as a reoccurring theme in this play. It seems like Medea is not one to let others walk over her, and she seems pretty feisty. I bet she won’t go down without a fight, what do you think?

Also, it seems that something much worse will come forth as Medea even discusses how she doesn’t even like to look at her children because of the disgust she has for Jason.  Someone begins to stir the pot and there are rumors going around that Medea and her children might be exiled,  do you think this will really happen? And why?

  1. Hey Alex,
I like the question about Medea going down without a fight. Personally, if my husband had betrayed me like that especially with kids in the mixture as well I would be furious. It is not only sad that her love left her for another women but she has to face the embarrassment of people finding out and being left completely alone. She has not only lost her husband, but her children; she even goes as far as saying, "Oh, what misery! … Cursed sons, and a mother for cursing! Death take you all – you and your father…" (21-22). So, no I really don't think she is going to go down without a fight. I believe she is going to do whatever it takes to get her revenge, whether that means taking everyone she cares about down; even her sons. And although she makes public the situation that is going on she understands the risk she is putting on her own life, but luckily the King of Athens comes in and protects her slightly. But, she takes this opportunity to strike and to strike hard. I really like how she looks at what she is seeking as justice and not necessarily revenge because Alex don't you agree that is was crazy that Jason has the audacity to blame it all on her and call her overreacting?
He was the one who cheated, so how could she be the one who is overreacting? sorry Jason but that is not how it works.
Do you think it was right of him to accuse her of overreacting? And if so, what should she do to prevent him from accusing her of that again?

Also, to answer your second question, I do believe they might get exiled. I don't think it is fair at all but that's how things usually panned out for women in these stories. OHHH also, one more question, do you think it is fair for the children to get punished even though they are just caught in the crossfire? Do you think it's fair of Medea to not be able to look at them just because they are offspring of Jason?
